Hello Parents!

Thank you for visiting the Music at Success Primary School website!

This website supports students and families to understand, engage with, and extend music learning both at school and at home.

What do we do here?

Most students from PrePrimary to 6 attend weekly music classes. These lessons include moving, singing, playing a range of instruments, listening, reading, writing and creating music.

What else?

Extra-curricular Music activities are available to selected students. These groups include Senior Choir (Years 5 – 6), and the Atwell Area Concert Band.

The Instrumental Music School Services program runs within the school. This Government program provides a select group of Year 5 and 6 students with instrumental lessons within school time (at present we offer Trumpet, Trombone, Clarinet, Flute and Classical Guitar).

We also have a private tutor who teaches drums after school.

Anything more?

All students are encouraged to broaden their horizons and experience Music incursions. In the past we have welcomed Kaboom Percussion, jazz band Adam Hall and the VPs, OperaWA, West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Musica Viva performers. The Atwell Area Concert Band also visit our school annually.

Supporting Your Child’s Music Learning

You don’t need to be a musician to support your child’s learning. The most important things you can do are:

  • Encourage regular, short practice sessions rather than long, infrequent ones
  • Provide a quiet, consistent space for practice
  • Show interest by asking your child to demonstrate what they are learning
  • Support routines and reminders so practice becomes a habit
  • Encourage effort and persistence – progress takes time

Students can use the resources on this website to guide their practice and reinforce skills learned at school.

How learning and progression work

Our music program is designed to build skills gradually over time.

Students:

  • Develop skills through sequenced learning experiences
  • Revisit and consolidate concepts before moving to the next stage
  • Build confidence through practice, performance, and participation
  • Progress at different rates depending on their experience and engagement

Progress is not always linear – students may need time to consolidate skills, and this is a normal and important part of learning.

Expectations for students

To support success in music, students are expected to:

  • Participate actively in lessons and rehearsals
  • Engage with learning tasks and rehearsal opportunities
  • Practice regularly when required (particularly for choir and instrumental programs)
  • Show respect for others and contribute positively to group learning
  • Take responsibility for materials, instruments, and instructions

Families can support this by:

  • Encouraging commitment and follow-through
  • Supporting opportunities for practice and participation
  • Communicating any concerns or challenges

But why???

All students are encouraged to involve themselves with Music to the best of their ability. Music makes so many contributions to childrens’ development; it assists their academic achievement and social/emotional wellbeing, it enhances brain function, memory, concentration and ability to express feelings. And it’s fun!
